Gracias a una investigación profunda que realizó el diario New York Times, con una encuesta selectiva entre la comunidad cinematográfica de Hollywood y otros países, que consisitió en la votación de 500 expertos de la industria del cine, eligieron las 100 mejores películas de este siglo, entre directores, actores, actrices, productores, críticos y cinéfilos reconocidos, votaron por las mejores películas que se estrenaron desde el 1 de enero de 2000, hasta el día de hoy. Entre los votantes de la lista, participaron reconocidas figuras como Pedro Almodóvar, Guillermo del Toro, Julianne Moore y muchos más.
Múltiples comentarios han girado en torno de esta lista, donde muchos coinciden y muchos otros no, y aunque los lugares en la lista se dieron según el número de votos, muchos al leerla hacen sus propias votaciones y asignan las películas en el lugar que consideran correcto.
